Adult Literacy Center of the Lehigh Valley

The ALC has helped students from around the world achieve a better life in the United States. We have had some amazing success stories from students who have worked hard to improve their situation.

English for Speakers of Other Languages

ESOL/Civics and Citizenship
ALC's English For Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) program helps non-English-speaking and limited-English-proficient adults to speak, understand, read and write in English.

Classroom instruction is offered regularly at convenient sites throughout the area, including space donated by schools, clubs and churches. Instructors are specially-trained professionals who are members of ALC's staff. Advance registration is required for admission to this program, which is offered to participants free of charge.

The next set of ESOL classes begins Sept. 13, 2005. Classes are offered on a semester schedule - with the fall session running from September until early December and the spring session running from January until early June. The ESOL program holds graduation ceremonies every June and every December. Students can begin studying throughout the year as long as there is space.

Individual instruction is offered by volunteer mentors who have received training from ALC's professional staff. Sessions are held at times and locations mutually agreed upon by the student and the mentor. Potential students are interviewed and evaluated by an ALC staff member who places the student with a mentor.
As part of this program, ESOL students who want to gain their citizenship can work with instructors and specially trained mentors to do so.

GED PROGRAM
ALC's Adult Basic Education/GED (ABE/GED) program builds skills in reading, writing and math and enables students that not complete school obtain the high school diploma that is not only desirable, but often required, for employment.

Classroom instruction is offered regularly at convenient sites throughout the area, including space donated by schools, clubs and churches. Instructors are specially-trained professionals who are members of ALC's staff. Advance registration is required for admission to this program, which is offered to participants free of charge.

The ABE/GED classes begin Sept. 13.2005. Classes run from September until June with a 6 week summer session.

Individual instruction is offered by volunteer mentors who have received training from ALC's professional staff. Sessions are held at times and locations mutually agreed upon by the student and the mentor. Potential students are interviewed and evaluated by an ALC staff member who places the student with a mentor.

Youth in Adult Education Program

YAEP
ALC has launched a new program to help younger high school dropouts earn their GED and learn important life skills.

The Youth in Adult Education Program (YAEP) targets 16- to 21-year-olds who have not completed high school. ALC has seen a sharp increase recently in young GED students. These students have needs that are different from those of their older peers. Currently, English-speaking dropouts from this age group make up one-fifth of all ALC students.

YAEP is unique from ALC's regular GED program because it uses specific materials tailored to younger dropouts and because it combines GED instruction with a counseling and support program that concentrates on building self-esteem, anger management, time management, decision making, and goal setting. ALC pays the cost of the GED exam for YAEP students. In starting the program, ALC has added a part-time counselor to its professional staff.

In addition, ALC provides supplemental instruction to pregnant and parenting youth at one of Allentown's high schools.
