Staff Success Story

Patricia E. Cooper, an instructor for the Adult Literacy Center of the Lehigh Valley (ALC), is one the best adult instructors in the state, according to the Pennsylvania Department of Education (PDE).

Cooper is one of nine Adult Practitioner Excellence (APEX) award winners for 2005, as chosen by PDE's Bureau of Adult Basic and Literacy Education (ABLE). She and her fellow winners were honored at the Pennsylvania Association of Adult Continuing Education (PAACE) Midwinter Conference in February, 2005 in Harrisburg, PA.

Cooper, of Saylorsburg, is a GED instructor and mentor coordinator for ALC. Along with her work in the classroom, Cooper helps supervise and train the agency's 105 volunteer mentors.

PDE created the APEX awards in 1997 to honor adult educators who reflect what it considers to be best practices in teaching and learning. APEX recipients are nominated by their agencies and selected by a committee of teachers, administrators, students and PDE staff. Cooper is the first APEX winner from ALC.

Cooper has taught at ALC since 1994. She has also been an elementary school teacher, a pre-school teacher and a welfare caseworker. She has a Master of Education from East Stroudsburg University and a Bachelor of Arts degree from Florida A&M University.
